Red roses and heart-shaped boxes full of chocolate are nice, but romantic getaways make for an unforgettable Valentine’s Day experience. Before you assume a long weekend will bust your budget, know that it’s possible to curate a cheap romantic getaway.

For those looking to make the most of the holiday that falls in line with Presidents Day weekend, GoBankingRates.com has rounded up these U.S. destinations to explore with your sweetie.

Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Chapel Hill is home to the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, but it’s much more than a college town. Aside from exploring the campus, stroll hand in hand down Franklin Street, the town’s main drag, for signature Carolina barbecue at Crook’s Corner and The Crunkleton for cocktails and spirits.

Nightly rates at elegant and centrally located The Franklin Hotel are around $200, including taxes and fees.

Manchester, Vermont

It doesn’t get more New England-Americana than Manchester. Layer up and head to the Green Mountain State for winter fun at one of the nearby ski resorts like Stratton, Bromley or Magic mountains. When you want to warm up, you can ice skate indoors at Northshire Civic Center’s Riley Rink, take a yoga class or indulge in some romantic R&R with a couples massage at Equinox Spa.

Located just a few miles outside of Manchester is Norman Rockwell Studio & Inn, the former home of artist and illustrator Norman Rockwell. For around $150 a night, guests can enjoy a quaint, tranquil lodging experience in Southern Vermont.

Sante Fe, New Mexico

Travel to the land of arid air and cacti to visit Santa Fe, N.M. With a thriving food and restaurant scene, Santa Fe is considered a food lover’s paradise and boasts cuisines of all ethnicities and nations. Winter is the time for skiing or snowshoeing, but if you’re looking to spend time indoors, you can take in historic and cultural sites like the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and the New Mexico Museum of Art.

For $116 a night, you and your valentine can score a room at the 4-star Hilton Santa Fe Historic Plaza.

Seaside, Oregon

Nearly 90 miles away from Portland is the romantic town of Seaside. Nestled on the Oregon coast, Seaside is perhaps most famous for being the end of Lewis and Clark’s trail in their trek across the continent. There’s no shortage of ways to explore Seaside on foot, bike, kayak or skateboard.

When you’re tired of exploring the town’s craft breweries and shopping, you can relax like lovebirds in a nearby Airbnb for just $125 a night.

Washington, D.C.

The nation’s capital is the nexus of democracy, but it’s also a destination for history-loving romantics. Centrally located and easily accessible for East Coasters, Washington, D.C., is a budget travel haven as many of its top attractions like the Smithsonian museums and U.S. monuments don’t charge admission. At night, you and your main squeeze can snuggle up by the fire at The Wharf, D.C.’s waterfront development, or eat like a local at Ben’s Chili Bowl, a District institution where you can get a bowl of chili for just $5.95.

Just a nine-minute walk to the White House and an 11-minute walk to the Washington Monument, the J.W. Marriott is in the heart of D.C. For the weekend of Feb. 15-18, the four-star hotel is offering rooms for less than $200, including tax.
