Livermore’s Al Fontes Wins Bob Dellinger Award

Amateur Wrestling News, the oldest publication devoted to amateur Wrestling named Californian Al Fontes as the 2018 recipient of the Bob Dellinger Award. The Dellinger Award has been given to the nation’s top wrestling writer since 1960. A native of Livermore, Al has been actively involved in the sport of wrestling in many functions since first entering the sport in 1978. He has served as State Editor of the California Wrestler Newsletter since 1995 and a contributing editor of several national wrestling publications and websites, including Wrestling USA Magazine, Amateur Wrestling News, WIN Magazine, InterMat, FloWrestling, and theMat. His awards include Wrestling USA Editor-of-the-Year in 2001, WUSA Person-of-the-Year in 2002, and was an Irv Oliner Award recipient for contributions to California wrestling.

Fontes also coached wrestling for 25 years, at Livermore HS, Antioch HS, Liberty HS, Junction Avenue Middle School, Christensen Middle School, for the Tri-Valley Wrestling Club, and Delta Wrestling Club. He was California Team Leader at the NHSCA Senior Nationals in 2001, 2002, and 2006, winning the national team title in 2001 and posting runner-up finishes the other two years. He has been responsible for compiling statistical history of all CIF State Champions, NCAA Champions, High School All-Americans, Freestyle/Greco-Roman All-Americans, and Olympians.
